Sharing Your Faith Through Social Media

NOTE FROM KRISTA: This month’s blog is by Macy Brown, a college freshman at Campbellsville University. I have known Macy since her junior year of high school and have watched her be an influencer as she shares her faith through social media. I pray that her story and tips for sharing the Gospel on social media will encourage and motivate you to be an influencer for the gospel.

I was raised in a Christian home surrounded by a great church family. I came to know Christ at a young age. However, throughout middle school, I went to church on autopilot. My faith was at a standstill. I was not growing but simply going through the motions. I had recently been introduced to social media, and as a result, my mind became filled with thoughts of comparison. When I scrolled through Instagram, I saw the highlight reels of influencers’ lives. I began to believe the lie that I was not smart, pretty, or popular enough. Do you relate?!

The summer before my freshman year of high school I was battling anxiety about school, insecurities, and comparison like never before. It was here, in my lowest season, that God met with me. In June, my youth group headed to camp. I was ready for a week away from all the distractions, but I had no idea what God would do. During one of the sessions, the camp pastor preached on reaching the nations with the Gospel. He shared that there are some 3.3 billion unreached people who have never heard the Good News of Jesus Christ. It was as if I was the only person in the room, and I knew God was speaking to me. At that moment, during the sermon on reaching the unreached, God called me to ministry. But how could a high school student from a rural town in Tennessee share the Gospel with the world?

Whether we influence one person or one million, we have influence!

I started high school with confidence like never before. I knew my worth. I knew my God-given identity. And I knew my calling – to make the name of Jesus known. Still, I did not know how to put action to this call from God. In the Spring of 2020, as we all know, the world shut down. Schools closed, and I completed my second semester of high school online. During this season of empty schedules, I found myself developing a deep hunger for the Word of God. The more I read my Bible, the more I wanted to read! I began learning more about the Lord and more about who He created me to be. I was truly filled with the joy of the Lord, and I wanted to share it with others!

In an instant, God made it clear how I was to share the Gospel – through social media. The more I thought about this, the more it made sense and sounded crazy, all at the same time! Who was I to have any sort of influence through social media posts? Yet, do we not all have influence? Whether we influence one person or one million, we have influence! So, I took a step of faith and started @Radiant.With.Grace. I had no idea what God would do, but I knew what He wanted me to do. I took the first step of obedience, then the next, then the next, and so on. Now I can see how God has used this to change my life! He has grown the gifts He has given me as I lead Instagram Live Bible studies. He has connected me with incredible mentors and friends from all over the globe. He used me to bring His Light to the darkness of social media, and He wants to use you to do the same thing!

 Practical Tips!

To the girl getting started:

  • Post 2-3 Bible verses each week. These can be shared via your story or posted to your feed. Do not underestimate the power of one verse! It can be the very encouragement someone needs.

  • Weekly devotional or sharing what God is teaching you from His Word. Get in the Word of God!  Then, share what He is teaching you with others! If you are struggling in an area, it is very likely that someone else struggling right alongside you. Share with them what God has used to encourage you.

  • Share posts/worship songs. Share the truth that others are posting. If it is biblical and inspiring to you… Share it! What is your favorite worship song at the moment? Share it on social media so that others can listen too.

To the girl going deeper:

  • Intentionally develop the gifts God has given you. Do you love music? Post a video of you singing/playing a worship song! Do you love to teach the word of God? Host a Bible study in person or online and invite your social media friends! Whatever your gift may be, use it for His glory.

  • Create your content aesthetic. Who doesn’t love a cute feed?! If you are ready to go deeper, find your content style. Let the creativity God has given you overflow and make it evident on your social media page!

One Last thought from Krista

The Institute for Family Studies and Gallup released new data last week about teens and social media. The data report shows that U.S. teens spend an average of 4.8 hours a day using social media. If you multiply that by weeks, months, and years, you will spend 33.6 hours a week, 144 hours a month, and 1752 hours a year on social media. This means that during middle and high school years, you will spend 1 year and 4 months on social media. Ladies, that is a lot of time on social media. Don’t waste it by just scrolling away. Use it to share your faith and be an influencer for the Gospel.
