Loving Yourself

“To acquire wisdom is to love yourself,
people who cherish understanding will prosper.”
Proverbs 19:8

“How do I love myself?” is a very common question everyone asks. The answer is found in scripture. Proverbs 18:8 says to love yourself is to acquire wisdom. That means you need to be in God’s Word. It is the only place you can discover how God sees and loves you so that you can love yourself.

Let me get you started by sharing some scriptures I’ve discovered.

You can love yourself by…

Remembering God Created You

Psalm 139:13-14

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

God created you! This is the foundation of loving yourself.  You must see that God created you exactly the way He wanted and there are no mistakes. You are wonderful.

Embracing How He Created You

2 Corinthians 12:7-9

“So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.  Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Paul doesn’t give details about his thorn in the flesh. It could have been persecution he faced from sharing the gospel or something physical.  But no matter what it was, he learned to embrace his weakness as the way God created Him and through that weakness he saw God’s power work through Him. He even boasted in it.

If you are struggling with what you see as weaknesses in yourself, embrace them as Paul did. Don’t ask God to take them away but ask Him to show you how He sees them. Whatever weaknesses you see in yourself may just be the way God wants to show His power through you to impact someone else.

Be Who God Created You

Ephesians 2:10

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

You are God’s masterpiece and He created you with a purpose. To live out that purpose and be who God created you to be, you need to stop comparing yourself to others and listening to what others say you should be. Instead, you need to embrace who God created you to be.
